Read fault codes without a tester

1. Prepare the vehicle for inspection as follows.
a) Check that the battery is in good working order, as the fault can not be determined if the battery voltage is low.
b) Switch off all additional equipment.
c) Set the gearshift lever to neutral or the selector lever to “N”.

Caution: Do not disconnect the battery until the diagnostic results are completely read out, as the DTC will be removed from the ECU memory when the battery pack or the engine control module connector is disconnected.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.

3. When checking with the “Check Engine” warning lamp using a special test lead harness, connect the “DCT” terminal of the diagnostic socket to the ground.

4. Check with a voltmeter.
a) Connect the voltmeter to the terminals “EDC” (diagnostic output) and “GND” (ground) of the diagnostic socket.
b) Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position and read the fault codes according to the oscillations of the voltmeter’s arrow.

5. When checking with a test lamp, turn the ignition switch to “ON” and read the fault codes according to the number of flashes of the engine warning lamp (“CHECK ENGINE”).

6. Determination of the DTC.
a) The fault code consists of two digits, the first digit is determined by the original series of flashes, then after a pause of 2 seconds a second series of flashes follows, which corresponds to the second digit of the code.
b) If two or more fault codes are detected, the smallest code will be displayed first, and then the remaining codes in ascending order of numbers. Between the codes there will be a 3-second pause.
c) If there is no fault, the indicator will blink at 0.5 second intervals.
d) If the diagnostic trouble codes are missing and the normal status code is not displayed, replace the engine control unit.

Removal of diagnostic trouble codes

Note: After performing the repair, remove the fault codes from the memory of the control unit.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
2. After disconnecting the wire from the battery terminal (-) for 10 seconds or more, reconnect the wire to the terminal.
3. Start the engine and after warming-up let it run at idling speed
4. When the ignition switch key is in the “ON” position, read the fault codes and make sure that the normal status code is output.

Reading of fault codes of control units:

Electronic 4M40:
Pin 1 is closed on the body, the key is in the ON position and we read the flashes of the Check Engine lamp.
